Merganser is a serious 40' working tug

LOA 40' LWL 36'9" Beam 14' Draft 5'1" Displacement 38,938 lbs.

This steel vee-bottom tug was designed to place very heavy moorings for aquaculture pens and assist larger tugs in bringing large ships into port to load paper products, wood, and granite. She has accommodations for four under the fore deck. A yacht version could have a deckhouse aft of the wheelhouse and would then have quite luxurious living accommodations. A compromise type with a smaller cabin aft of the wheelhouse, galley in the wheel house, and the cabin under the fore deck could be a working home afloat. She could pick up "tows" all up and down the East Coast.

From our travels we remember a tug like this called the Wrestler which one year went down the Intracoastal waterway with the owner and friends aboard. We were told by one of the crew that they had picked up enough work towing grounded yachts off the mud and picking up the occasional small tow job so that the trip was costing nothing. I can well believe it. It seems like you could make a nice life that way.
