Surprise 48

The 48 can be a family run passenger vessel, a small cargo schooner or a home and office

LOA 47'1 0" LWL 40' Beam 16'2" Draft 8'

This is a very large and powerful vessel, comparable to most 60 footers. She will be right at home in the most hostile conditions, and will carry plenty of sail for power, speed, and maneuverability when she needs it most. She is comparable in size to the larger original working Pinkies. As drawn, she includes a wheel house aft, with a steering station, optional sail handling lines, a chart table, and two berths. Next forward is a master stateroom with double berth, head, and writing desk. Skipping to the forward end of the vessel and working our way aft, there is a chain locker, a large traditional forecastle, with settees, alcove berths, and a table, then the large galley and head. This leaves 10' of available space right in the middle of the boat for cargo, more living space, offices, or whatever. We leave it up to you! The size and shape of the hull are such that there is an unusually wide range of options for utilization of space throughout the vessel.

This would be an ideal vessel for a live aboard couple to take day passengers, run a school ship, or take paying guests on a cruise. With the cargo hold option she’d be good for taking cargo from island to island in the Caribbean or firewood to outer islands in Maine or the Pacific Northwest, etc.  However this is not a vessel you should build so that a couple can have "all the conveniences" or "take everything you own" with you.  If that's your aim simplify your life and get a 30' vessel.
